Regarding the events of December 1989, Zhasulan remembers that on December 16, while sitting in the first lecture, there was sudden shouting and confusion from downstairs. Students began to leave the classroom to find out what was happening. It turned out that unknown students from other floors were shouting about the removal of D.A. Kunaev and the appointment of Koldin in his place. The students quickly moved towards the square, which was located near the communications school. When they reached the square, there were soldiers and military equipment blocking the entrance. The soldiers tried to prevent the students from entering, but after some attempts, the students managed to break through. During the confrontation, a soldier kicked a girl, and the students became furious. A scuffle broke out, and they broke through to the square, where there was a large crowd of young people and students shouting slogans like "Koldin must go, and we need our Kazakh leader!" Despite efforts from the police to disperse the crowd, the students stayed and continued protesting until the evening.
The police used force and water cannons to disperse them, but they did not leave. At one point, Zhasulan's foot was trapped in a tribune, and he nearly faced serious injury. In the evening, when the students returned to the dormitory, they were met by "DND" (a security group) with wooden sticks guarding the entrance until the morning.
